Gorgeous ‘Hand-Print’ Leaf Wreaths

We had fun making ‘hand-print’ leaf wreaths to support Arbor Day!  They are really simple, but turned out beautifully.

IMG_1585

I cut out the centers of a couple of paper plates…

IMG_1522

Then we folded paper into quarters…  Traced the kids’ hands…  And cut them out – creating 8 ‘leaves’ for each kid…  Folding the paper greatly reduced the amount of cutting required…

All efforts brought to get stimulated go in vain, if you do not prepare yourself viagra cheap sale before the love-game. The kids then covered the paper plate rings with glue (we used glue sticks) and we stuck on the hands… er…  leaves…  As usual, Tbear loved the glue sticks and did his best to eat one while we worked…

IMG_1581

We used green colored paper for the ‘leaf’ look…

IMG_1582

You could definitely cut out more hand outlines and fill the wreath in…  I had planned to have the kids color their hands, but we ended up skipping that part….  Lala was tickled with her wreath…  Now to decide where to hang them…  I think a hole punch and a little string may help…  🙂

The options for this craft are vitally endless…  Painting the ‘leaves’… Adding stickers, flowers, or other seasonal items…  Next time, I think we will do family hands for the ‘leaves’…  Another idea to add to my Family Tree Project…  😉  I love ‘hand-print’ crafts!

The First Time I Saw a Firefly…

Over the last couple of weeks, I have encountered several posts on Facebook about making ‘fireflies’ out of plastic eggs.  Mic thought they were really cool and took on the task of prepping the activity.  He found some awesome rainbow eggs on clearance and hit Walmart for some LED tea lights.  He used a small drill bit to make holes for the legs and antennae.  And cut up some pipe cleaners.  His enthusiasm was infectious!

IMG_1553

This project got me thinking about the first time I saw a firefly…  There are no fireflies on the West Coast where I grew up.  When I graduated from college, we took a trip down the East Coast.  We planned to spend a little time in North Carolina and one of my goals was to see a firefly.  Our trip began in Boston and we rode the train down the Eastern Seaboard, hitting many of the major cities, ending up in New Orleans.  About halfway through the trip, we were in Washington DC, running all over the Mall, taking in the sights.  It was the end of a long day and we were walking up…  I think it was Pennsylvania Avenue… in the dusky twilight, when suddenly I noticed a couple of glowing bugs fly by me.  It took me a moment to realize what I was seeing, but when I did – I stopped dead in my tracks…  I had hoped to see fireflies in North Carolina, but hadn’t even thought to look for them in DC.  What a delightful surprise!  I was thrilled!  Fortunately there weren’t a lot of people around or they would have wondered about the crazy young woman freaking out about the fireflies.  😉  I have looked through every picture I can find on my computer, but can’t find the ones I swear I took that night.  The moment is so vivid in my memory…  I don’t really need a picture…

Anyways, we put the ‘fireflies’ together.

The materials for one ‘firefly’: plastic egg, pipe cleaner (cut into four equal pieces – we mixed and matched colors…), strip of paper, googly eyes, glue dots, and a LED tea light.

The project was definitely a hit!

After running around in the dark for a while, Lala told me, “I’m going to keep my firefly forever because you made it and it’s not alive.”  She knows things that are alive have to be let go to “live free and in the wild” as the Wild Kratts say.  🙂

A wonderful thing about life is how simple things can bring joy to others and remind you of wonderful memories!  I still have lots of things I want to see…  the Northern Lights, Mayan Pyramids, beaches of Normandy, Great Barrier Reef, White Cliffs of Dover, the Great Wall of China…  What’s on your ‘bucket list?’  Go…  Make a memory!  It can start with something as simple as a plastic egg…  🙂

The Letter “Q”

Q is a funny letter…  It’s the letter of the week this week, so as we were making dough “Qs” this morning, we were talking about words that start with “Q.”  Everything I came up with had the “qu” combo at the beginning…  I knew this was true of “Q,” but I wasn’t sure why… And I got to wondering about this “quixotic” letter…

(Links will open in new tabs.)

I enjoyed this blog post from Dictionary.com — Why does the letter Q almost always need to appear with a U in order to be useful?  First, the “qu” combo is called a digraph or “a pair of letters representing a single speech sound.”  If I understand correctly, basically “Q” lost ground to other letters, particularly “C,” in denoting related sounds in words.  The post indicates, “Q without U is used to represent sounds not often found in English but typical in Semitic languages.”

According to Wikipedia’s “Q” page, “Q is the second-least-common letter in the English language, with a frequency of just 0.09% in words. Only Z occurs less often.”  If you like trivia, check out this Wikipedia article – List of English words containing Q not followed by U.  Most are considered “loanwords.”  The English word that stood out to me was “qwerty”…  a word to describe a type of computer keyboard layout…  Anyways, enough about that…

We had fun making dough snakes and turning them into “Qs.”

Recap of the Week of April 13, 2015… Earth and Arbor Days

We had a fun week last week!  Lala’s coloring is becoming very thorough and fairly precise.  We had fun with our letter “P” and number “10” printables.  We talked a little bit about Earth Day and taking care of our planet.  A trip to the library produced a few books to read on topics such as recycling.

The marble painting was really interesting.

IMG_1290

IMG_1291

I used a 13″x20″ aluminum roasting pan and about 6 marbles.  I think it would work better with a little smaller pan.  The kids thought it was cool though.

You can check out how the paper plate crowns turned out in my post about that project.  (All links in this post will open in a new tab.)

We also did a little math activity…  Sock sorting!  😉  Math and laundry help…  Score for Mom!

I never cease to be amazed by the things kids find to do and what will fascinate them.  Tbear found a small puddle in the garden spot and was having a grand time ‘painting’ with water and mud.  My budding artist…!

We also had fun with the Legos Abuela brought us.

IMG_1272

Overall it was a great week, including our visit to the Fire Tamers’ Lair, a walk by the river, dance class, co-op, a trip to the library, and fun times with friends.  I’ll write more about our adventures in gardening and learning Spanish later this week.  Learning is fun!

Crowns!

One of our planned projects for last week was paper plate crowns.  They didn’t quite go according to plan, but still turned out really cute!

IMG_1340

IMG_1330

The paper plates were too small for the kids’ heads, so we ended up using colored paper instead.  We folded the paper in half lengthwise and then stapled two folded sheets together.   Two sheets of paper just fit around their heads, allowing for stapling along the other side to create the ‘crown.’

IMG_1349

Now the fun part…  stickers!!!

We added some ribbons on the back to add to the ‘regal-ness’ of the crowns…

This is the best shot I could get of the ribbons on Tbear.  The one I took of the ribbons on Lala was blurry…  They didn’t want to sit still for pics!

IMG_1335

Tbear wore the crown for a little while and then pulled it off.  He then proceeded to remove all the stickers and put them on another piece of paper…  🙂

Another fun project completed!

Recap of the Week of April 6, 2015… America, DC, Spanish, and…

We had a fun week last week, filled with a trip to the science museum, our homeschool co-op, and activities at home.  Last weekend we even squeezed in a little visit to a nearby lake.  It was still a little cool, but our kids (especially Tbear) are crazy about water and sand.  Looking forward to more good times this summer!

IMG_1096

You can take a little side trek to see our adventures at the science museum in our ‘fishing’ post.  (All links in this post will open in a new tab.)

We enjoyed reading Good Night America.  I really love that series.  We have Good Night World,  Good Night Galaxy, and a couple of others.  Eventually we’ll have the whole set.  You can check out Good Night America for yourself at this Amazon affiliate link. (If you purchase through this link, we will receive a small commission.  For more information on affiliates, please see our Legal Stuff page.)

Mic and I enjoyed watching the Washington DC DVD…  Tbear wasn’t interested at all, but Lala watched it for about a half an hour…  We bought the disc on a long ago trip to DC, before we had children.  When I checked the copyright date, it said 2001.  How time flies!  It was a fun little trip down memory lane for us.  We realized we had never been to the National Gallery of Art.  Now it is on our list the next time we get to visit!

We also started planning a regular look at our safety and preparedness activities…  Lala and I discussed full names and then she practiced reciting and dialing our phone number with Daddy’s help.  Next on the agenda is to get a simple phone hooked up where the kids can access it and role play calling 911.  We need to find a way to emphasize they should only call if something is really wrong though!  There are so many skills the kids need to know that we hope they will never have to use!

I am especially excited about our new adventure in learning Spanish!    Keep your eyes open for a post about that (hopefully) tomorrow… 😉

And last but not least, we finally got started on our garden!  I have been teaching gardening in our homeschool co-op, but hadn’t spent much time on our own.  We made a good start and will be sharing more about our progress and our plans later this week.

We are looking forward to a week of projects, learning, and a trip to a fire house.  Stay tuned!

Slime!

We recently had fun making a batch of “slime.”

IMG_1120

I found a recipe for it you can check out at Projects for Preschoolers (link will open in a new tab).  We actually used a slightly different recipe from another website, but when I checked that site’s policies I found out they don’t allow any links to their site… Oh well…

Anyways, we had fun making the slime…  It’s pretty simple to make – requiring only glue, Borax, and water, along with a few simple tools – bowl, measuring cup (having two might make things easier), and spoon.

IMG_1123

We didn’t add any colors or sparkles…  Sometimes less is more…. 😉  I also didn’t go into a discussion about polymers…  We’ll wait on that…

Both kids wanted to stir the mixture as we added ingredients.  Lala had a blast playing with it.  Tbear liked it at first, but when we got it out the next day, he started running off with a disgusted look on his face when we offered it to him…  😀

I ended up storing ours in a plastic jar, as a little water seaped out of the plastic bag.

You can get the ingredients for slime at pretty much any grocery or “big-box” store for a few dollars.  Or Amazon can deliver them to your door… (For more information on the affiliate links below, please see our Legal Stuff page – links will open in a new tab):

I splurged and bought a gallon of glue.  I think we will be using it for lots of projects in the near future…

Beans!

We spent some time working with beans last week, for music, math, and art.  (Jelly beans likely would have been a good choice given the season, but they would have gotten eaten before we could have done anything with them!)

I did use some plastic eggs to make bean shakers, since they are easy to find this time of year…  I’ve done this before with toilet paper tubes and tape…

IMG_1117

I used super glue to seal them, but some of them still popped open…  I think I will try hot glue next time…

IMG_1116

The kids had a great time shaking and dancing to the ‘music!’  🙂

We also did a math sorting activity, starting with a bag of 5 kinds of mixed beans…

I gave each kid a tray with 5 sections and let them sort out the different kinds of beans.

IMG_1112

My two-year-old’s tray didn’t look quite like this…  😉  And he dumped it over before I got a picture…  He was having fun!

Once the sorting was done, we moved on to bean art!  Combining cardboard, glue, beans, and a two-year-old results in:

And apparently glue is also a tasty, finger-licking snack…
